At Carter Smile, our main goal is to build healthy foundations for bright futures. In partnership with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that every child have their first dental visit by age one. Early visits help create a safe, trusting relationship between your child and our team while establishing the foundation for healthy teeth, gums, and overall oral development.

What to Expect at the First Visit

The first visit is all about getting to know you and your child in a warm, welcoming environment. During the appointment, we will:

  • Perform a complete oral exam
  • Provide an age-appropriate cleaning
  • Review proper brushing and flossing techniques
  • Discuss fluoride, healthy dietary habits, and positive oral routines
  • Answer any questions you may have

Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to establish a strong, positive dental routine at home. And of course, no child leaves without fun goodies and a special prize from our prize board!

Helpful Tips Before the First Visit

We understand that both children and adults can feel anxious about visiting the dentist. Our goal is to make your child’s experience positive from the very beginning. To help with this:

  • Talk openly about the visit. Preparing your child ahead of time helps build trust. Avoid keeping the appointment a surprise.

  • Read children’s books about visiting the dentist. Seeing positive examples can ease worries.

  • Avoid “scary” words. Words like “shot,” “pain,” “hurt,” or “needle” can create unnecessary fear or anxiety.

  • Know that anxiety is normal. It’s perfectly okay for you or your child to feel nervous. Our doctors and team are specially trained to support children with all types of emotions and behaviors in a gentle, caring way.

We are here to partner with you in teaching and caring for your child in a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment—setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
